Challenge

Building on the critical acclaim of its inaugural season, the creative team behind HBO’s The Pitt entered Season 2 intent on elevating both its narrative arc and the technical approach employed by the lighting and camera crews to capture the action.

Cinematographer Johanna Coelho, AFC, and Chief Lighting Technician Keelan Carothers sought a powerful LED solution that could keep pace with the production schedule and match the sun’s shifting color and intensity across the story’s extended twelve-hour daylight shift. Tungsten and HMI fixtures have long been motion-picture lighting standards because of their ability to reproduce the warmth, texture, and intensity of sunlight. For the Ambulance Bay set, Coelho and Carothers needed similar performance with greater flexibility.

Solution

Following technical discussions with Aputure and hands-on testing, the team identified the STORM XT52 as the right fixture for the production.

Serving as a primary narrative anchor, the Ambulance Bay visually communicates the passage of time throughout the twelve-hour shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Thanks to the XT52’s BLAIR light engine, the lighting team seamlessly matched or countered dynamic solar color temperatures to create any required hour of the day.

Capturing the relentless momentum of an emergency room required an agile technical workflow. Transitioning to LED technology eliminated lengthy striking warm-up times, enabling the unit to reach full intensity instantly while drawing just 32 amps at 240V AC to keep pace with an expedited production schedule.

To overcome space constraints on the Ambulance Bay set, Coelho and Carothers deployed the XT52 to construct a compact booklight rig. The fixture’s minimal heat signature allowed them to position diffusion and high-output units in close proximity to actors without compromising talent comfort or performance.

Results

The team transitioned from a single STORM XT52 evaluation unit to a permanent four-fixture deployment in lieu of the previous two-fixture 18kW HMIs for their booklight setup, allowing the crew to efficiently light both the primary Ambulance Bay stage and interior hospital sets via daylight-balanced window pass-throughs. Integrating Aputure’s latest LED innovations enabled Coelho and Carothers to streamline lighting workflows while honoring the authentic, high-stakes atmosphere of a fast-paced medical center. By eliminating thermal overhead and reducing setup footprints, the lighting department consistently met demanding production schedules without sacrificing cinematic control or talent comfort.

Ultimately, combining cutting-edge BLAIR light engine technology with seasoned technical craftsmanship empowered the crew to deliver an immersive visual narrative that faithfully reflects the relentless dedication of frontline medical personnel.
